It has been announced that GPs are now able to prescribe injectable weight loss medications. However, NHS England has currently limited this option (for 2025/26) to patients who meet strict eligibility criteria. These include:
- A Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or above, and
- At least four qualifying health conditions, such as:
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Abnormal cholesterol levels (dyslipidaemia)
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
- Cardiovascular disease
- Type 2 diabetes mellitus
